Community Priorities
Papatoetoe
Vision - Progressive, Proud and Prosperous:
The aim is for Papatoetoe people to be safe and healthy. This will become our wealth. We will be proud of our unique environment and the opportunities to express art and culture. We will be ambassadors in the promotion of these ideals.
The Papatoetoe community identified the following areas as needing particular attention:
Educated and Knowledgeable People
- Encourage strong family units
- Address high truancy rates and issues around lack of discipline in schools
- Encourage a “kids should be kids” approach to learning; minimise boundaries and don’t go overboard with safety restrictions that discourage creative activity.
Vibrant and Strong Communities
- Build neighbourhood connectedness through programmes that promote social interaction among residents
- Improve information flows about events, facilities and festivals within Papatoetoe and the City
- Market Papatoetoe (using the toi toi image) as a good place to live and do business in.
Safe Communities
- Ensure a visible Police presence in Papatoetoe and Manukau
- Enforce current bylaws regarding drinking in public places.
Moving Manukau
- Ensure public transport networks are connected and the City is well covered
- Ensure efficient, effective traffic design.
Healthy People
- Address capacity issues of Council swimming pools
- Clean streets and community areas
- Ensure all groups have sufficient and appropriate access to health facilities.
Thriving Economy
- Lower rates and taxes
- Ensure new developments reflect local identity.
Sustainable Environment and Heritage
- Preserve open space
- Ensure quality urban planning maintains and enhances local identity
- Ensure construction methods and materials have minimal impact on the environment – i.e. less concrete and more permeable surfaces.
