Community Priorities

Pakuranga

Vision - Progressive, Proud and Prosperous:

We want Pakuranga to have a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, with a strong sense of connectedness and empowerment among our families and communities. We want facilities that are safe and well maintained; an efficient road and transport system; a healthy and affordable community and environment; and a local historic environment and heritage that is maintained and improved.

The Pakuranga community identified the following areas as needing particular attention:

Educated and Knowledgeable People

  • Ensure local communities have a greater say in what is taught in schools, such as having vocational based learning, life and civic skills as well as new skills for today’s workforce
  • Provide opportunities for lifelong learning.

Vibrant and Strong Communities

  • Provide more community facilities which are affordable, well maintained, with the right capacity
  • Promote neighbourly contact
  • Ensure there are enough constructive activities for young people
  • Strengthen families.

Safe Communities     

  • Have a more visible and increased Police presence
  • Limit access to alcohol – through reducing the number of outlets and places of consumption
  • Reduce gambling opportunities
  • Engender a sense of friendliness and tidiness, and be graffiti free.

Moving Manukau

  • Ensure cleaner, coordinated and frequent public transport access to key services such as the Hospital and Super Clinics
  • Improve and complete the Auckland region roading network, including the Auckland Manukau-Eastern Transport Initiative.

Healthy People

  • Provide affordable and accessible health services
  • Ensure shorter waiting lists for the elderly.

Thriving Economy

  • Ensure affordable rates for low income households
  • Fill skills shortages in key areas
  • Promote Manukau as the place for business and careers.

Sustainable Environment and Heritage

  • Reduce residential and industrial pollution and rubbish
  • Improve beach and water quality and storm water drainage
  • Protect key environmental features such as native trees and volcanic cones
  • Preserve historic buildings.
