Community Priorities
Otara
Vision - Progressive, Proud and Prosperous:
Otara will implement action to grow, by building stronger partnerships and relationships that support the success of the community.
Collaborative approaches will build a future together that acknowledges and implements the concept of sustainability of human resource and capital, as well as the whenua.
There will be health and wellbeing for all our people through working together and an educated and knowledgeable community where the Otara economy will thrive and grow in a sustainable manner, by achieving identified objectives.
The Otara community identified the following areas as needing particular attention:
Vibrant and Strong Communities
- Improve the Town Centre to attract tourism and celebrate the unique Otara culture
- Develop a city-wide co-ordinated Event and Festival strategy that will complement and support the Otara arts calendar and strategy
- Develop and improve facilities and parks to meet the needs of the evolving Otara youth culture
- Support people to be involved in democratic processes, and raise issues through the Otara Community Board and the Council’s Annual Plan process.
Safe Communities
- Support crime patrols and Neighbourhood Support networks
- Develop community safety partnerships and an action plan.
Moving Manukau
- Ensure safe access for pedestrians around schools via lower speed limits, walking school buses and limited access for vehicles
- Increase community education about traffic safety and injury prevention.
Health and Wellbeing
- Ensure health organisations link together and share information and resources
- Provide more programmes and facilities that encourage and promote healthy active lifestyles
- Create a climate of health and wellbeing, not sickness.
Educated and Knowledgeable
- Create a partnership between families, children and teachers
- Provide education for lifelong learning, quality teaching
- Ensure accessible, affordable and appropriately resourced qualifications
- Have technology that is user friendly, accessible and connected, with opportunities for all.
Thriving Economy
- Build a creative, cultural, retail and business centre
- Provide financial support to develop and encourage small businesses
- Develop successful collaborative partnerships with all people, cultures, local and central government and businesses.
Sustainable Environment and Heritage
- Ensure sustainability – keeping what we value by replanting new areas, while maintaining those that are existing
- Restore and remediate the Otara Lake and Creek
- Protect cultural heritage – whenua, mountains and buildings.
