Howick

Vision - Progressive, Proud and Prosperous:

Howick will be a culturally diverse, vibrant, safe and environmentally sustainable place for families. Flourishing shopping centres include a unique boutique village, heritage features and cultural and arts facilities.

Clean beaches, well maintained parks and walkways will enhance people’s lifestyles.

The Howick community identified the following areas as needing particular attention:

Educated and Knowledgeable People

  • Ensure young people have the information and support to move easily from school to work and further education
  • Ensure learning opportunities are available for all residents
  • Provide more opportunities for apprenticeships.

Vibrant and Strong Communities

  • Improve access to Council planning services for Howick residents
  • Recognise the value and promote the character of Howick village
  • Involve youth in planning and decision making.

Safe Communities

  • Advocate for community based responses to crime and anti social behaviour
  • Limit access to alcohol in public areas and enforce liquor control measures.

Moving Manukau

  • Ensure Howick is serviced with adequate public transport
  • Improve transport networks.

Healthy People

  • Improve physical access (e.g. public transport, effi cient roading) to health services, in particular Middlemore Hospital and the Super Clinics
  • Provide translation services at health facilities for new settlers
  • Promote physical activity in public open spaces and parks.

Thriving Economy

  • Promote Howick as a ‘boutique’ village
  • Ensure infrastructure is in place to support the boutique image, for example a small cinema
  • Promote and enhance the market day for a local produce ‘farmers’ market.

Sustainable Environment and Heritage

  • Ensure urban growth management preserves environmental and heritage values
  • Improve water quality of the coast and waterways
  • Preserve and promote the green open spaces and native bush areas
  • Enhance education on native ecology
